Metal Market Watch

What steel, aluminum, copper and zinc are doing and what it means for coil prices and quoting jobs. Numbers only from named sources.

How to read these numbers

Hot-rolled coil is the base steel price that mills quote in dollars per short ton; painted Galvalume roofing coil sells at a premium above it for the metallic coating, the paint system and the mill extras, so a move in hot-rolled coil usually shows up in roofing coil quotes within a few weeks. Aluminum, copper and zinc trade on the London Metal Exchange and COMEX in dollars per pound, and roofing products made from them move with those prices plus fabrication.

We publish only figures we can attribute to a named source and leave a dash where we cannot. Installers use the trend to time coil purchases and to write price-validity clauses into bids; homeowners use it to understand why two quotes a month apart differ. None of this is investment advice.
