Editorial Policy

Everything we publish outside the directory itself, the homeowner guides, the trade blog, the news snips, the show calendar and the market watch, follows this policy. The point of it is simple: tell the truth about metal roofing in plain language, name where facts come from, keep money out of editorial decisions, and fix mistakes quickly.

How guides are written

Homeowner guides are written by us from working knowledge of the trade and from published standards and specifications, such as UL 2218 for impact, UL 790 for fire and ASTM E1592 for wind uplift. We state only well-established facts. When something varies by region, product or installer, we say so rather than picking a number. Prices are given as broad national ranges, labeled approximate and installed or material only, with a reminder that they change with region, pitch, complexity, metal and time of year. We never invent statistics, studies, survey results or quotes. Every guide is original; we do not copy, paraphrase or mirror other sites.

How guides are updated

Each guide carries the date it was published and the date it was last updated. We review cost guides at least once a year and other guides when a standard, a product category or common practice changes. If a reader or an installer points out something outdated, we check it and fix it, and the updated date moves.

The trade blog

Blog posts are written for working installers and fabricators and use the trade’s own vocabulary. We name manufacturers, products and tools when that is useful, and we report facts about them without praising or criticizing a brand. When a post includes our analysis of what a product launch or a company move means, that analysis is labeled as our view. No manufacturer or supplier pays for, reviews or approves a post before it runs, and we do not run sponsored posts.

News snips

A news snip is our own two-or-three-sentence summary of a development in the industry, written in our words, with a link to the original source so you can read the full story where it was reported. We do not copy text or quotes from the source, and we label each snip with its source name. We choose stories by what matters to installers, fabricators and homeowners, not by who sent us a press release.

Market watch

Market updates report prices for steel, aluminum, copper and zinc only when we have them from a named public source, with the date the number was taken, and they leave a figure blank rather than guess. The commentary explains what the numbers may mean for coil buyers and roofing bids. It is reporting for the trade, not investment advice.

No paid placement in editorial

No company pays to be mentioned, recommended or linked in a guide, blog post, news snip or market update, and no company can pay to keep a story out. In a directory map search the first three places can be paid sponsorships, labeled Diamond Sponsor, Ruby Sponsor and Emerald Sponsor; every other place is ordered by reputation, years in business and fit with the homeowner’s search, not by payment. When a listed company is named in editorial content, it is because the story warranted it. We are not owned by or affiliated with any manufacturer, contractor, supplier or trade association.

Corrections

If we got something wrong, tell us through the contact page with the page address and what you believe is incorrect. We check it, fix it and, for anything more than a typo, add a note to the page saying what changed. We would rather be corrected than be wrong in public.

Questions about this policy, or about who we are, are answered on the about page. How reviews are moderated is covered separately in the review guidelines.
